Fishing Report for New York - Long Island North Shore

Capt. Robin Calitri
May 18, 2005
Long Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hello from Long Island, New York

The Huntington area is fishing well but differently. The bass seem to be in deeper water and feeding on large squid. The fly must be deep, either red or pink and 4-6 inches long. I use Orvis density compensated sinking lines. Most of the fish are 22-27 inches with a few keepers here and there.

Jim Del Grosso reports bass and tons of blues in the back country of Gardiner’s Bay. They are difficult to get on a fly but the spinning poppers work. The Duran brothers report that there are lots of good size bass in the same area but you must fish at night with large swimming plugs.

The Long Island Bassmasters held it’s first tournament of the season on Candlewood Lake. New member, Russ Grissom won with almost 15pounds of bass. That is quite a nice limit of 5 fish since most were smallmouth. Pete Chinsky won the non-boater division.
