Biloxi, MS - Pennsylyania Angler Fights Monster Fish

Capt. Robert Brodie

Mississippi Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Thursday-August 7, 2008

Today I had the pleasure to guide Justin and Jamie Martin on a fishing trip to the Kartina Reef. This morning trip started out great with white trout and ground mullet coming in on every cast.

Jamie early into the 2 hour and 45 minute battle.

The bite was hot and steady, and a few small sharks added to the action, It looked like this would be another easily achieved 100 plus white trout and ground mullet morning, but at the 55 mark something hit a rod set out in a holder.

Before she was almost spooled, we pulled up the anchor and proceeded to chase the fish. It pulled us a mile south of the reef, and then all the way to the east, almost south of the Beau Rivage Casino.

Typical white trout and ground mullet catch at the fish cleaning table.

The whole battle took 2 hours and 45 minutes before the light 10-pound test broke. We never got to see the fish, and it seem we never really wore it down. Amazing! I heard a lot of theories on what this might have been, but we'll never really know for sure.

Anyway it was time to go home and clean the fish, and this pleasant couple followed me home where I cleaned and packaged up their catch for a fish fry in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

PS: Yes, it's true, the big one does get away occasionally, but that's why we fish for the unknown.

There are still Florida pompano at the barrier islands.
